How you prepare for a Brazilian wax in the days before your appointment has a direct effect on how comfortable the service is and how clean the results look. Good prep isn't complicated, but skipping it makes a real difference. Most people never get told the specifics until they're already on the table.
This guide covers everything to know before you arrive: the right hair length, how to prep your skin, what to avoid, what to wear, and how to time your appointment. What happens during the service itself is a separate conversation. This is purely about getting you ready so your first experience is as comfortable as it can be.
What hair length is right for a Brazilian wax?
The single most important thing you can do to prepare for a Brazilian wax is to have the right hair length, roughly a quarter inch, or about the length of a grain of rice. That's typically two to three weeks of growth after your last shave. Too short and the wax can't grip the hair properly. Too long and the service can be more uncomfortable than it needs to be.
If you've been shaving regularly and are coming in for a first Brazilian wax, plan your last shave so that you hit that two-to-three-week mark before your appointment. Don't shave the day before thinking it will help. It'll leave the hair too short to work with and you'll have to reschedule.
If your hair is on the longer side going in, a light trim with small scissors to about a half inch is fine. You don't need to do this yourself if you're unsure. Just let Sie Sie know when you arrive and she can assess it. The goal is simply to give the wax the best surface to work with.
How to prep your skin in the days before
Exfoliating gently one to two days before your appointment helps loosen dead skin cells and lift any hairs that are starting to grow close to the surface. Use a soft body scrub or a gentle exfoliating mitt in the shower. Keep it light. You're not trying to scrub deeply, just to clear the surface so the wax can grab cleanly.
Don't exfoliate the day of your appointment. You want the skin to be calm and not freshly worked when you arrive. Irritated or over-exfoliated skin is more sensitive, and keeping that sensitivity low is the whole goal.
In the week leading up to your appointment, keep the area moisturized. Hydrated skin releases hair more easily than dry skin, and it tends to recover more quickly after the service. A simple unscented lotion applied to the area after your shower is all you need.
What to avoid before your Brazilian wax
If you use retinoids, tretinoin, or strong chemical exfoliants anywhere near the bikini area, stop using them at least 48 hours before your appointment. These actives thin the skin and make it significantly more reactive. Waxing over recently treated skin can lift the surface, an outcome that's uncomfortable and takes time to heal.
Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and spray tans in the 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. Sunburned or recently tanned skin is sensitized, and waxing over it can cause more reaction than normal. If you have any visible burn, redness, or irritation in the area, reschedule. Sie Sie can get you in once the skin has calmed.
Limit caffeine and alcohol the morning of your appointment if you can. Both make the skin more reactive and can lower your natural tolerance threshold. Skin that is calmer before the service recovers faster after it.
Timing your appointment around your cycle
Skin sensitivity peaks in the days just before and during your menstrual period. The skin is more reactive, which can make waxing feel more intense than it typically would. If you can plan ahead, aim to schedule your Brazilian wax in the middle of your cycle, when sensitivity is lowest.
That said, many clients wax during their period with no issue. It's a personal comfort call, not a rule. If your cycle timing doesn't give you a lot of flexibility, don't let it stop you from booking. Just know that the mid-cycle window tends to be the most comfortable.
What to wear and how to handle discomfort
Wear loose, breathable clothing to your appointment: loose cotton underwear and comfortable pants or a skirt. Tight waistbands, leggings, and underwire can press against freshly waxed skin and cause irritation in the hours after the service. Dress as if you're going for a walk, not a workout.
If you're sensitive to discomfort and want to take the edge off, an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen taken 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment can help reduce both sensitivity and any post-wax inflammation. This is completely optional. Most clients don't need it, but it's worth knowing about for your first time.
Every Brazilian wax at Beautifully Made Esthetics includes a complimentary hydrating finishing serum applied at the end of the service. It soothes the skin immediately and helps it settle quickly. You don't need to bring or apply anything on top of it.
Day-of hygiene and what to do right before you arrive
Shower the day of your appointment with a gentle, unscented cleanser. Keep it simple: no fragranced body wash, scrubs, or products with strong actives in the area on the day of. A clean, product-free surface is exactly what makes the service go smoothly.
Don't apply lotion, oil, or any product to the bikini area on the day of your appointment. Residue on the skin creates a barrier that can interfere with how cleanly the wax adheres. The exception is your normal deodorant applied to other areas. Just avoid applying anything directly to the area being waxed.
Arrive on time. Brazilian wax appointments at Beautifully Made are scheduled on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and the appointment slot is reserved for you specifically. Arriving a few minutes early gives you a moment to settle in and go over any questions before the service begins.
Booking, logistics, and what to expect at the door
All appointments at Beautifully Made Esthetics are booked through Fresha. There are no walk-ins. The studio is located at 823 S Church Street, Suite D-120, inside MIX Sales Studios in Greenville, SC. You'll find the suite once you're in the building, and the address is easy to navigate to.
The Brazilian wax (with butt strip) is $70. Because that falls under the $99 deposit threshold, no deposit is required to hold your booking. Just show up. If you're curious about adding a Vajacial to your appointment as a complementary skin treatment for the bikini area, you can read what a Vajacial actually is before you book. Most clients who add it end up making it a regular part of their routine.
A signed consent form is required before your first Vajacial if you choose to add one. The booking platform will prompt for it. For the Brazilian itself, there's no additional paperwork. Just arrive clean, prepped, and ready to go.
